Edward W. Kane and James Gubelmann IYRS Maritime Library
The Edward W. Kane and James Gubelmann IYRS Maritime Library is open to the public and is the only library of its kind in the state of Rhode Island. The library’s collection includes books, materials, and artifacts related to the maritime heritage of Rhode Island, with a focus on Newport, Aquidneck Island, and Narragansett Bay. These are held in a circulating collection of books as well as in an archive of rare books, printed matter, photographs, film, and other A/V and digital resources. The library is the home of the Tom Morris Library Collection from the National Sailing Hall of Fame.
Visitors and patrons can view many of the artifacts, which include ship models, marine paintings, nautical fittings, photographs, and historic yachting trophies, on display in the library.
The handsome reading room that houses the IYRS Maritime Library collection is located on the fourth floor of the John Mecray Aquidneck Mill Building which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The library overlooks the IYRS campus and the Newport waterfront.
