IYRS School of Technology & Trades in Newport, Rhode Island is an exciting option for learners who enjoy experiential, hands-on education. IYRS offers STEM-based certificate programs that will teach you skills that you can use for a lifetime while providing an immersive educational experience at our campus located on the edge of Newport Harbor. Gap year programs range from 6 to 9 months.
How do I know if a gap year program is right for me?
Are you someone who likes to work with your hands? Do you enjoy seeing your work physically come to life at the end of each day? Do you want to go to college...eventually...but you're not sure what to major in? Do you want to strengthen your college applications with meaningful real-world experience? Do you need a reset in the middle of your college experience to make sure you get the most out of your last few years of school? Ready for a mid-college reset to realign your goals and finish strong?
If you answered "yes" to any of these questions, a gap year at IYRS may be the perfect fit. During your time at IYRS you will learn new skills, take a breath during or after high school, college, or career, and prepare for your future in a supportive and immersive learning environment.
Gap Year Programs
Composites Technology - 9 month certificate program which begins in September
Digital Modeling & Fabrication - 9 month certificate program which begins in September
Marine Systems - 6 month certificate program which begins in September or March
Before possibly going to college, I wanted to be confident I knew what I wanted to study. Taking four years and spending that money is a big deal...I actually know what it’s like to move out and go to work every day and live in a more realistic work environment. IYRS is a non-profit school where you'll learn hands-on skills to design, create, and build everything from surfboards to electrical panels on yachts to drones to products you've designed yourself. Your gap year at IYRS will help you build your educational resume with a meaningful (and fun!) experience while still allowing you to apply to your future college as a freshman if you are a recent high school graduate.
IYRS is nationally accredited by ACCSC (Accrediting Commission of Career Schools and Colleges) and the Rhode Island Board of Governors for Higher Education. Students are not required to have any specialized science or math skills to be accepted into the program.

SCHOLARSHIPS & FINANCIAL AID
IYRS offers scholarships and financial aid to all gap year students who qualify. Students will automatically be considered for all IYRS scholarships as part of their application process.
