WELCOME! We are so excited you're ready to explore IYRS School of Technology & Trades in Newport, Rhode Island.
IYRS is a hands-on, non-profit school where high school graduates learn in-demand skills to design, create, and build everything from wooden boats to skateboard decks to electrical panels on yachts to drones - and far beyond. At IYRS, we teach students to BUILD BEYOND ORDINARY and in doing so, to build successful careers in just 6-20 months.
Are you someone who likes to work with your hands? Do you enjoy seeing your work physically come to life at the end of each day? Since 1993, IYRS has been training recent high school graduates to become skilled craftspeople, designers, and engineers.
Our faculty to student ratio is intentionally low so that each student receives individualized attention with one goal in mind: student success. On average, more than 85% of our graduates each year are employed in their field at graduation, many with multiple offers. Each of our 5 full-time programs is ACCSC-accredited and is approved by the Rhode Island Board of Governors for Higher Education.

We are often asked, "What do IYRS students do after graduation?"We love answering this question. Our recent graduates work as engineers on tall ship research vessels in the Caribbean, Tahiti, and New England, repair wind turbines made from advanced composites high in the air in the midwest, design and fabricate prosthetic limbs for amputees, keep the Block Island Ferry running right here in Rhode Island, build and repair custom yachts - including state-of-the-art America's Cup boats - and so much more. Many are successful entrepreneurs who hire new IYRS graduates to grow their own companies.

Our Career Development Department works with every student individually to place them in an industry externship where they gain valuable resume and real-world experience. The Career Development Department has relationships with more than 600 industry partners who seek to hire our students. Hands-on shop experience + classroom learning + industry experience. This is the model IYRS has built for your success.
And because our programs range from just 6 to 20 months, the cost of attendance is a fraction of a traditional, 4-year college experience, especially with our generous grants and scholarships available to all qualified students.
