Combined Program in Composites Technology & Marine Systems

IYRS has the top Marines Systems School In Rhode Island

Combined Program in Composites Technology & Marine Systems | 11 month accredited program | Meets Monday through Friday, 8:30-5 | Enrolls March 2023 only

The final Combined Program in Composites Technology & Marine Systems program begins on March 1, 2023. Apply here. Beginning in September 2023, both programs can be taken back-to back.

The Combined Program in Composites Technology & Marine Systems is ideal for students looking to acquire a broad range of hands-on skills you can apply to an in-demand career in the marine industry. This ACCSC-accredited program offers the opportunity for students to experience the full curriculae of our Composites Technology and Marine Systems programs back-to-back with a single externship at their conclusion, trained and prepared to seamlessly enter the marine industry.

Composites Technology

Composites Technology is an immersive program that teaches students to design and build with advanced materials like carbon fiber and fiberglass, preparing them for careers in exciting industries including aerospace, yacht building, automotive, sporting goods, wind energy, and beyond. The demand for lighter, stronger, faster products made from composites, and the people who know how to build them, has never been greater.  Prior composites experience is not necessary for this program, but a passion for creating and building with your hands is.

In Composites Technology, you’ll learn from and work beside our expert faculty who have decades of combined composites industry experience and a passion for teaching. More than just building, you’ll learn fundamental product design concepts and learn to create digital drawings using CAD (RHINO). Throughout the program, you’ll experience the excitement of executing increasingly sophisticated hands-on projects using composite materials and processes, culminating in your own capstone project. Capstone projects have included everything from surfboards to custom car components.

Most of our students have very little or no previous experience working with composites. What they do have is a desire to begin a maritime career working with their hands and their minds. Don’t be intimidated by what you don’t know – that’s what the Composites Technology program is built for. Our faculty are experts in the field and in the classroom, ready to take you from composites beginner to Certified Composites Technician.

Students will prepare for and take the Certified Composites Technician (CCT) exams as part of their curriculum. CCT is considered the highest level composites certification available in the United States.

Marine Systems

In the Marine Systems program, you’ll learn the theory and technologies of both stand-alone and fully-integrated boat systems and the inner workings of a powerboat down to the most meticulous details. By the time you graduate, you’ll be able to install, repair, and troubleshoot everything from outboard and diesel engines to electrical systems to computer-based electronics and hydraulics. During this program, you'll build a free-standing, complete simulation panel that contains the essential systems that go into modern boats. By the time you graduate, you’ll be able to install, repair, and troubleshoot everything from diesel and outboard engines to electrical systems to computer-based electronics and hydraulics as a Certified Marine Technician. Students will take ABYC (American Boat and Yacht Council), NMEA (National Marine Electronics Association), and Yamaha certification exams as part of their program, readying themselves for in-demand careers in the marine industry.
