Many people choose to give from their assets - stocks, gifts from their IRA, and grants from their Donor-Advised Funds to potentially see even larger tax savings. Donations made may be tax-deductible to the extent allowed by law. 

Boat Donations 
When you donate your boat to IYRS,  you receive a charitable tax deduction and the satisfaction of knowing you have made a significant positive impact on the school and our students. IYRS works with Block Island Maritime Funding, a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization, to facilitate the boat donation process. 

Block Island Maritime Funding receives the charitable donation of your boat and you designate IYRS as the beneficiary of the proceeds after Block Island charters, then sells, the boat to its new owner. The benefits to you as the donor are significant: a tax deduction to the full extent allowed by law at the time of the donation, a significant monetary gift to IYRS, and the opportunity to hand off the maintenance, storage, and other costs of boat ownership.

Boat Donations (Restorations)
IYRS accepts a limited number of boat donations for student restoration projects. All boat donations must be pre-approved. Please contact Bill Kenyon, Director of Education, or call 401.848.5777 x213 for details.

Many corporations match their employees’ charitable gifts to non-profit organizations, effectively doubling the power and value of your contribution. To find out if the company you work for (or your spouse's company) has a matching gift program, contact your human resources office and follow the directions to initiate a match. Please contact Liz Isdale, Director of Philanthropy, a 401.848.5777 x218 with any questions.

If you are 70½ or older, you can make a tax-free gift to IYRS directly from your individual retirement account (IRA). This is called a qualified charitable distribution (QCD).

The advantages of a QCD

• Tax benefits: A charitable gift transferred from your IRA directly to IYRS will not be taxed and can satisfy your required minimum distribution (RMD), maximizing benefits to both you and IYRS.
• Ease: You do not need an attorney to make this gift; simply contact your financial advisor.

The requirements for an IRA gift

• Be age 70½ or older
• Give your required minimum distribution, up to $100,000, from your IRA per year
• Transfer funds directly from a traditional or rollover IRA to IYRS

Please note: Gifts from an IRA cannot be accepted when goods or services from the charity are provided.

Endowed funds provide support for IYRS for a discrete length of time, or into perpetuity. The donor's gift is professionally invested and a percentage is spun off annually to be used by IYRS. Endowed funds may be designated by the donor for a particular purpose, including scholarship, faculty chair, or operating funds. Endowed funds start at a minimum gift amount of $25,000.
