Catching up with IYRS Marine Systems alum Vincent Mastino

IYRS caught up with Vincent Mastino, '24 Marine Systems to see what life is like after an IYRS education.

Where were you working prior to IYRS?

I was working at a local yacht club as a launch driver and maintenance tech for the club boats.

How did you first learn about IYRS?

I first learned about IYRS fresh out of high school, ended up pursuing a traditional 4 year degree, but then ended up revisiting it as I was more interested working on boats than in an office.

What was your externship, where was it and what were you doing?

My externship was working for International Marine Electronics in Costa Rica where we worked as the sole marine electronics company for the pacific coast’s large tournament, charter, and recreational fishing fleet.

How did you discover your externship opportunity in Costa Rica?

I discovered it through a friend who worked down there previously.

Did anyone in particular inspire you to pursue a career in the marine trades?

My dad; from the time I could turn a wrench, the value of being able to fix something yourself was never overstated, and that if you plan to own a boat you should be able to know how to do pretty much everything on it to keep it in shape.

Is there any staff or faculty member at IYRS that left an impression on you?

The whole marine systems crew left me wishing the program was longer!

Did you earn any certifications during your time at IYRS?

I received all of the certifications available through the systems program.

What are you doing now?

Currently I am an electrician for Hinckley.

What surprised you about your time at IYRS?

How fun it was, and how many lifelong industry friends I made.

What do you wish everyone knew about IYRS?

That if you don’t feel like a traditional 4 year college is for you and you enjoy work in the
marine trades and are looking to take it to the next level its definitely the place to be.
