Tyshon Jones '19 - Marine Systems is one of those students you never forget. He enrolled in IYRS's 6-month Marine Systems program in the fall of 2018. He commuted to Newport from Connecticut and worked two jobs while attending school, no small feat. If that weren't enough, he was also a Student Ambassador who wrote blog posts and helped introduce prospective students to IYRS at our Open Houses. His passion for the marine industry began with a fascination with the Titanic and there may have been several times where staff sang a certain Celine Dion song to him – I will not provide video evidence…
When Tyshon walked across the stage at graduation in June 2019, he was met with symphony of cheers from faculty and staff because during his 6 months at IYRS he made a lasting impact, and he continues to do so as an alum.
Our hope at IYRS is that every student leaves here with a career that they love, in an industry they are excited about, and that they lead successful, rewarding lives. This is exactly what Tyshon is doing! He is currently working as an Engineer for Interstate Navigation. The next time you get on the Block Island Ferry for that beautiful ride to the island, know that Tyshon played a big part in making that ride smooth and enjoyable.
His hardworking nature has Tyshon putting in long hours, but he truly enjoys the work. “What I like most about my job is that everyday is learning experience. My boss has been working for the company for around 30 years so he has a lot of knowledge and wisdom that he passes down,” Tyshon says.
We are so proud of Tyshon and all of the IYRS alumni who are using what they learned at IYRS to establish successful careers!
