Onboard Hair Dryer Hacks

Onboard Hair Dryer Hacks

My name is Mari, and I am a former yacht stewardess.  Currently, I am a student in the Marine Systems program at IYRS. Despite using a large variety of actual tools in my daily life, I have found an unlikely household item to be one of my staples. The following “hacks” showcase a few of the many uses for a hair dryer onboard a boat:

  • Dry out mattresses after hatches leak
  • Create a wrinkle-free bedspread with Febreze fabric spray, careful tucking, and a quick blow dry
  • Heat hoses in a pinch to get them over barbed fittings
  • Save time when drying sole covers/carpet while spot treating
  • Easily remove labels from plates, candles, etc
  • Quickly dry steam off of a mirror for a streak-free finish
  • Bend frames to custom fit sunglasses offshore when your good pair go for a swim

Note: Please do not attempt any of these “hacks” unless your boat’s electrical system is equipped to handle the high amperage draw of a blow dryer and is equipped with proper overcurrent protection. Also please do not leave your blow dryer unattended when in use and unplug and monitor it after use, as it can be a fire hazard. Reference ABYC’s E-11 for standards regarding electrical systems and GFCI outlet requirements.
