Hands-on training for the next generation of marine systems technicians in
NEWPORT, RHODE ISLAND
Turn your love of boating and being on the water into a rewarding career. IYRS’s Marine Systems program will prepare you to seamlessly enter the marine industry as a Certified Marine Technician in just 6 months.
In this hands-on program, you’ll learn the theory and technologies of both stand-alone and fully-integrated systems and the inner workings of a sailboat or powerboat down to the most meticulous details. By the time you graduate, you’ll be able to install, repair, and troubleshoot everything from outboard and diesel engines to electrical systems to computer-based electronics and hydraulics.
Students will build working simulation panels from the ground up which contain all of the systems on a powerboat and will prepare for and take valuable American Boat and Yacht Council (ABYC), National Marine Electronic Association (NMEA), and Yamaha certifications as part of the program:
- ABYC Marine Electrical Certification
- ABYC Marine Systems Certification
- ABYC Diesel Engine Certification
- NMEA Basic Marine Electronics Installer
- Basic NMEA 2000 Installer
- Yamaha Introduction to Outboard Systems
This immersive, nationally accredited program prepares students with a wide range of skills for in-demand maritime careers.

What I found at IYRS was a perfect match for my goals. Newport Harbor is a hotspot for yachting and a perfect place to make valuable connections in the industry. The program itself offers a fast-paced, hands-on approach that was exactly what I needed to gain confidence in using various shop tools. Moreover, it has been instrumental in teaching me the value of both independent work and collaborative efforts within a group setting. - Luca Deleau Jagerschmidt '24,
