What is a Marine Systems Technician?

A marine systems technician is a professional who specializes in the installation, maintenance, and repair of the systems and equipment on boats, ships, other marine vessels and even RVs and vans. These systems can include electrical, mechanical, and propulsion systems, as well as navigation and communication equipment.

Marine systems technicians must have a thorough understanding of the various systems and components that make up a marine vessel. They must also be able to diagnose and troubleshoot problems, make repairs, and conduct routine maintenance. They may also be responsible for installing new equipment and systems on boats and ships and may work in a variety of settings, including shipyards, marinas, and onboard vessels.

What Does a Marine Technician Do?

Marine technicians are responsible for ensuring that the systems and equipment on these vessels are functioning properly and safely. Some marine technician duties and responsibilities can include:

  • Inspecting and diagnosing issues with engines, electrical systems, propulsion systems, and other mechanical equipment
  • Performing routine maintenance and repairs on engines, generators, and other systems
  • Troubleshooting and repairing engines, electrical, plumbing, and hydraulic systems
  • Installing new equipment and systems, such as navigation and communication systems
  • Working with other marine technicians to complete projects and repairs
  • Communicating with customers and other professionals to commission and sea trial new installations and repairs
  • Keeping accurate records of repairs and maintenance performed on each vessel

What Do You Need to be a Marine Technician?

To become a Marine Technician, an individual typically needs:

  • Technical knowledge of marine systems and equipment, including engines, electrical systems, propulsion systems, and navigation equipment
  • Knowledge of safety procedures and regulations
  • Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting skills
  • Familiarity with manufacturer recommendations and how to look up information efficiently
  • Physical stamina and ability to work in physically demanding environments
  • Good communication skills and the ability to work well in a team
  • Some certifications may be required such as those from the American Boat and Yacht Council (ABYC), the National Marine Electronics Association (NMEA), or from manufacturers like Yamaha and others
  • Basic computer skills and ability to use diagnostic tools, a plus!

It's worth noting that requirements for the position may vary depending on the employer and the specific job, but the above mentioned are common requirements for most Marine Technician positions.

What Education is Required to Become a Marine Technician?

One of the most common paths to becoming a marine technician is to complete a marine technician program or apprenticeship. These programs can be found at various institutions such as vocational or trade schools, community colleges, and some marine service centers. 

The curriculum of these programs typically includes a combination of classroom instruction and hands-on training, covering important topics such as marine engine systems and repair, electrical systems and wiring, plumbing and marine sanitation, navigation systems and electronics, and safety and regulations. The duration of these programs may vary, with some being completed in several months, and others taking up to two years. These programs may lead to a certificate or diploma.

At IYRS, because a one-month externship is built into all of our full-time programs, most of our students enter careers upon program completion. 

What is the Average Salary of a Marine Technician?     

According to the 2022 The Massachusetts Marine Trades Educational Trust (MMTET) Wage & Benefit Survey, marine industry salaries have increased across the board since 2019. The survey lists diesel technicians making an average of $37.87/hour, outboard technicians making an average of $35.85/hour and electrical/electronics technicians making an average of $35.63/hour, to give a few examples of marine technician career paths. IYRS’s marine systems program gives students the opportunity to earn up to 6 industry-recognized certifications. This broad base helps students narrow their focus so they can build toward specialized careers like these.

It is important to note that the earning potential of marine technicians may vary based on a number of factors, including location, experience, and type of employer. For instance, those working on barges in the oil and gas industry or on large ships may earn higher salaries compared to those working in recreational boats or marinas. This information can serve as an indication of the earning potential for those considering a career as a marine technician. 

How to Become a Marine Technician?

Becoming a marine technician requires a certain level of education, training, and experience. To embark on this career path, individuals typically follow these steps:

  1. Enroll in a marine technician program. These programs can be found at vocational or trade schools or community colleges. 
  2. Gain experience: Hands-on experience is essential to becoming a successful marine technician. Many externship programs and apprenticeships offer opportunities for students to work on real-world projects, as well as internships or co-op programs.
  3. Obtain certifications: Some certifications may be required, such as those from the American Boat and Yacht Council, National Marine Electronics Association, or other various manufacturers.
  4. Continuing education: Marine technology is constantly evolving and it is important to stay current with the latest developments in the industry. This can be achieved through continuing education and professional development opportunities, which will help professionals advance in their career.

In our ACCSC-accredited Marine Systems program, students learn the theory and technologies of both stand-alone and fully integrated boat systems and the inner workings of a powerboat down to the most meticulous details. By the time you graduate, you’ll be able to install, repair, and troubleshoot everything from diesel and outboard engines to electrical systems and plumbing, computer-based electronics, and hydraulics. 

As part of the program, students will also have the opportunity to earn valuable certifications from industry organizations such as ABYC, NMEA, and Yamaha. Additionally, students will construct working simulation panels that include all the systems found on recreational vessels, providing them with an immersive and hands-on experience using current technology. This program provides a diverse range of skills that are in high demand within the maritime industry. Through other apprenticeship programs and job shadowing, it could take years to round out foundational knowledge and skills. In just six months at IYRS (5 months on campus with 1:1 career counseling and a 1-month externship), you could be fully prepared to enter the marine industry as a systems technician.

Marine Systems is a 6-month program during which students learn how to install, repair, and troubleshoot all aspects of a boat’s systems, from the engine to electrical to hydraulics and plumbing, preparing them to become in-demand marine technicians or to provide a solid foundation that becomes a springboard to a career as an engineer or entrepreneur.

Composites Technology
Composites Technology is a 9-month program that teaches students to design and build with advanced materials like carbon fiber, fiberglass, and epoxy, preparing them for careers in some of the world's most exciting industries like aerospace, yacht building, automotive, sporting goods, and wind energy. 

Digital Modeling & Fabrication
Digital Modeling & Fabrication is a 9-month program that teaches students about design thinking, generating innovative solutions, and how to utilize 3D modeling software like SOLIDWORKS®, Mastercam and RHINO while also gaining knowledge in using CNC mills and lathesYou will design and build a capstone project before concluding the program with an industry externship.

Boatbuilding & Restoration
Boatbuilding & Restoration is a 20-month program that is dedicated to the craft and related disciplines of boatbuilding and marine woodworking. Students gain knowledge, skills, and hands-on experience as they prepare for a rewarding career in the boatbuilding and repair industry.
