Youth Boat Building Program

Students ages 14 and 15 are invited to apply to participate in this hands-on program where they will work in teams over the course of 4 weeks to build a boat that they will launch in Newport Harbor at the conclusion of the program. . Students will learn workplace readiness skills for the marine industry including shop safety, project planning, leadership skills, teamwork, basic hand tool operation, resume writing, and the importance of being on time to a work site.

Limited to 10 participants. Participants are hired onto RIMTA’s payroll and paid for their time—this is a free program for families, with no cost to parents outside of transportation and food. Participants receive an hourly stipend of $16/hour. This program is sponsored by the Governors Workforce Board, Real Skills for Youth, and RIMTA.

This is a 4-week program and students are expected to attend each day.
