Youth Canoe Building Program

Students ages 14 and 15 are invited to participate in this hands-on program where they will work in teams over the course of 5 weeks to build two cedar strip planked canoes with woven seats. Students will learn workplace readiness skills for the marine industry including shop safety, project planning, leadership skills, teamwork, basic hand tool operation, resume writing, and the importance of being on time to a work site. Participants will launch and paddle their canoes in Newport Harbor at the conclusion of the program. 

Limited to 10 participants. Participants receive a stipend of $150 per week, based on attendance. This program is sponsored by the Governors Workforce Board, Real Skills for Youth, and RIMTA.

This is a 5-week program and students are expected to attend each day.
