Get an exciting introduction to sailing photography with an on-water class with maritime photographer and captain, Patrick Sikes.  You will be one of a maximum of 6 students on Narragansett Bay during the renowned IYRS Classic Yacht Regatta, getting up close and personal with some of Newport’s finest classic yachts! Learn the tips and tricks of the pros while creating iconic sailing images to take home and enjoy. No photography experience necessary, though you will need your own camera (see more below).

About the instructor: Patrick Sikes (@magic_sites) is a noted maritime photographer from Connecticut who can frequently be found shooting classic yacht regattas throughout New England. Patrick holds a 50-ton USCG captain’s license so you will be in good hands on his 23’ center console. He will put the boat in the best possible positions as he guides you on camera settings and angles that will result in beautiful shots.

What to bring: Please pack just one bag, preferably waterproof if you have one.

- Bagged lunch and drink
- Camera with sufficient battery and memory cards for 4 hours of shooting
- Lenses (if you have them) with a focal range of 24-200mm (longer lenses are great too if you have one!)
- Camera strap, something comfortable enough to always have the camera attached to your person
- Lens cleaning cloth
- Plastic bag or spray guard for camera (optional)
- Sunscreen
- Sunglasses
- Jacket (windbreaker or rain shell, just in case)
- Non-marking rubber soled shoes

I had an incredible time at the 2023 IYRS Classic Yacht Regatta. Patrick was very professional and did an amazing job getting us up close to the action on a picture perfect day, capturing the beautiful yachts in the amazing Newport backdrops. He took the time to share his expertise and advice with each student thoroughly. The entire IYRS team was very accommodating and organized. Seeing first hand the pride they take in their work and education is truly inspiring! I look forward to attending this event again each year!  ~ Joe Pramer
